Pushes four-year 5K total donations to over $648,000

MIAMI, Oct. 23, 2019 – Warmed up and ready to run, a sea of hundreds of blue-shirted Assurant employees served as a poignant backdrop at the starting line of the fourth annual Assurant 5K as company President and CEO Alan Colberg presented a ceremonial check for $210,459.32 to Maria C. Alonso, president and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade. That amount pushed the total funds raised over four years from the annual 5K event to $648,233 in donations, sponsorships and employee matches from the Assurant Foundation.

The 5,000-meter event, which took place on Tuesday, October 15 on a specially-designed course at the company’s south Miami campus, was produced by employee organizers and volunteers. It is the signature event for the company’s annual employee giving campaign to benefit United Way of Miami-Dade. At the end of the competition, awards were presented to the top three male and female runners and the groups with the best costumes and the highest percentage of participation.

“The Assurant Foundation and many of our employees give to United Way of Miami-Dade because of their track record for effectively doing what matters: advancing the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in the community,” said Shawn Kahle, vice president, Corporate Responsibility & Community Engagement and executive director, Assurant Foundation. “The Assurant 5K is another way our employee volunteers bring our ‘Assurant Cares’ spirit to life and give back to help strengthen the communities where we live and work.”

“We are so grateful to the entire Assurant family for running, walking and cheering for a stronger Miami,” said Alonso. “The energy at the 5K is palpable and shows that Assurant’s leadership and employees truly believe in working together to build a prosperous, healthy community.”

Before the check presentation, CEOs Colberg and Alonso were joined by leaders from their respective organizations for a symbolic ‘leadership lap’ to mark their decades-long partnership and emphasize the importance of businesses and charities working together to help others and strengthen communities. Assurant has raised more than $15 million for United Way of Miami-Dade through their annual employee campaign.

Assurant’s Colberg is among the 181 Business Roundtable CEOs who signed the “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation”.
