NEW YORK, Feb. 19, 2016—Assurant’s charged up conservation efforts have boosted energy efficiency at company facilities across the country and earned one of the nation’s top marks for best-in-class energy performance.
Nine Assurant office buildings earned the EPA's 2015 ENERGY STAR® certification for their energy conservation efforts.
A premier provider of specialty protection products and related services, Assurant recently earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2015 ENERGY STAR certification for its Atlanta office and eight other facilities. The Atlanta location was recognized after reducing its energy consumption by approximately 11 percent during the year. Assurant also earned the 2015 ENERGY STAR designation for eight office buildings in six other locations including Rapid City, S.D.; Springfield, Ohio; Kansas City, Mo.; Florence, S.C.; Milwaukee, Wis.; and Albany, Ore.
These accomplishments are the latest in an eight-year effort to reduce the company’s environmental footprint across the enterprise by instituting best practices and making cost-effective improvements to its building operations. To achieve certification, buildings must perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. On average, ENERGY STAR certified buildings use 35 percent less energy and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
“Being good corporate citizens and strong community partners is paramount to our values as a company,” said Alan B. Colberg, president and CEO of Assurant. “Receiving the EPA’s ENERGY STAR designation is a meaningful endorsement of the strategies Assurant has employed to reduce our environmental impact on the communities we live in and serve.”
Since 2009, Assurant has reduced electrical energy usage by 17 percent and saved enough energy to power more than 2,000 average size homes for one year. In 2014, the company’s energy conservation efforts were recognized by the EPA when Assurant was named a member of the ENERGY STAR Certification Nation for certifying six of its facilities.
Assurant has implemented energy-saving efforts at other facilities to minimize energy usage with a goal of earning ENERGY STAR certifications for all of its 15 main office buildings by the end of 2016.
About Energy Star
ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 different kinds of products, 1.4 million new homes, and 20,000 commercial buildings and industrial plants that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Over the past twenty years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.
