NEW YORK, April 2, 2007—Assurant, Inc. ("Assurant") (NYSE: AIZ), a premier provider of specialty insurance and insurance-related products and services, announced today that Ronny B. Lancaster, Assurant's senior vice president, federal government relations, will succeed Edwin L. Harper as senior vice president, public affairs and government relations, effective April 1, 2007. Dr. Harper will continue to serve Assurant with respect to federal government relations matters on a part-time basis.
Mr. Lancaster, 55, joined the company in 2005 and has served in his current role since that time. In his new role, he will lead Assurant's government relations group and will be responsible for managing Assurant's public policy strategy at both the state and federal level.

Prior to joining Assurant, Mr. Lancaster was senior vice president and chief operating officer at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta where he also served as senior vice president for management and budget and vice president for health and social policy. Prior to joining the Morehouse School of Medicine, Mr. Lancaster served the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. He holds a B.A. from the Catholic University of America, an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Georgetown Law. Mr. Lancaster is a member of the D.C. Bar.
Dr. Harper, 65, has been with Assurant since 1998. He was named senior vice president, public affairs and government relations in 2001. Prior to joining Assurant, Dr. Harper held a number of senior management positions in the private sector, including chief operating officer and chief financial officer of American Security Group; vice chairman of Commodore Applied Technologies; president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Railroads; and executive vice president and chief financial officer of the Campbell Soup Company. He also served as Special Assistant to President Richard Nixon on policy planning and budgeting. Later he served President Ronald Reagan as Assistant to The President and Chief of Policy Development in the Reagan White House. He also served as Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Dr. Harper holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from Prinicipia College in Elsah, IL.
